Animals in Forest and Sea

ここは まぶしい太陽の光が さしこむ、すきとおった 青い海。
Under the bright sunshine there is a clear blue sea,

さまざまな物語が くり広げられる、南国の青い海。
Where many stories occur everyday in the aquamarine of the south.

第１章．岩穴をめぐるケンカ
１．Argument over a Rock Cave

そこは 海の生きものたちの楽園だ――ところが。
This is a true paradise for sea animals...　actually, maybe not.

「おい、そこは わしのテリトリーだぞ、今すぐ 出てけ ！　」
"Hey you, go away right now! This is MY area!"

いっけん とても平和に見える海底で、
長いひげを生やしたエビの ばせいが ひびいた。
Although the plane sea bed looks exceptionally peaceful,
the yell of a long　bearded shrimp echoed.

彼が にらみつける 岩穴の中には、大きなタコの姿がある。
To where he gazes, there is a large octopus between the rocks.

「あら？　この海で いちばん美しい タコのわたくしに、なにか 文句が あるとでも？」
"Oh what? 　You have something to say to this Ms.Octopus,
the beautiful one in this sea?"

長いうでを 優雅に うねらせながら、タコは横目で エビを見おろす。
Moving its arms gracefully, the octopus glanced at the shrimp.

その態度にエビは鼻息を荒らげた。
That only gave the shrimp something more to say.

「だから、そこの岩に住むのは わしだ。　ほかの やつが 入るのは許さん！」
"I am telling you, it is me that owns that rock.
I won't give any permission to others using it!"

「いいじゃないの 岩なら そのへんに たーくさん ありましてよ」
"Who cares? I mean there are bunch of similar rocks around"

タコとエビは あっというまに 言い争いをはじめた。
So the two's conversation turned into an argument.

「じゃあ、なんで わしが 出ていかねば ならんのじゃ！」
"If so, why should I be the one to leave!"

「エビのくせに ずいぶんと 生意気ですわね」
"What? You are pretty bossy for a little shrimp"

「わしのほうが あんたよりも ずっと 年上なのじゃ！」
"I am much older and elder than you silly!"

また タコが なにか 言い返そうとしたとき、
二匹に のんきに 声をかけた者がいた。
When the octopus tried to say another word,
someone optimistic broke into their conversation.

「ハロー それを言うなら、おれのほうが あんたよりも年上さ、
そもそも ここのあたりは おれのテリトリーだしね」
"Hello, if you say so I am twice as old as you and this is my territory.
So sorry it's mine!"

二匹が するどく ふり返ると、
そこには 前足を 波にゆっくりと ゆらしているカメがこちらを見つめていた。
There was a turtle waving its arms,
when the shrimp and the octopus looked back.

だが、それは よけいに 二匹の怒りを ふくらませた ようだった。
However, that only made their argument larger.

「なんじゃとー！」
"What did you say!"

「いきなりなんですのっ？」
"What are you!"

「わー、いきなり怒らないでくれよー」
"Oh oh, don't be so passionate!"

おもしろがるように カメがおどけた。
タコとエビがさらに声をあらげて、カメに言い返す。
The turtle made fun of the shrimp and the octopus, then another fight began.

こんな光景は、この海ではあたり前のことだった。
This was a very daily thing in this sea.
小さな魚達が三匹の横を、知らん顔で通り過ぎてゆく。
The three small fish passed by, completely ignoring the three arguing.

そして、タコとエビが カメに向かって 飛びかかろうとした その時、
少しはなれた場所から声がした。
And when the octopus and the shrimp was ready to pounce on the turtle,
there was another voice from afar.

第２章．危機一髪　サメの大群！
２.That was Close! The Arrival of the Shark

「なあ三匹とも、ケンカは やめようぜ するなら 別の場所で してくれよ。
"Hey three of you, why not stop your fight. Or do it somewhere else.

このあたりには サメだっているんだから」
You know there are sharks around too."

そう こまったように 言ったのは、赤い甲羅(こうら)の大きなカニだった。
It was a red and large-sized crab that said so looking concerned.

だが 三匹の目に 止まったのは 彼の言葉ではなく、
彼が持つ 大きなハサミだった。
However what took the three animals' attention was the crab's claw,
not his words.

「あっ、ちょうどいいカニよ、
よかったら この二匹の しっぽでも、ちょん切って くれないか」
"Good timing crab,
if you are good can you use your craws to these guys' tails or something"

カメが エビとタコを 指さして 言った。
Said the turtle pointing at the shrimp and the octopus.
とうぜん、二匹は 声を荒らげる。
Surely they yelled back.

「じょうだん じゃない！ あの カメの舌でも……」
"Stop kidding us! Or you can cut off that turtle's tongue..."

「待て 待て、 おれは だれとも 戦わないよ」
"Stop, stop, I'm not wanting to fight"

三匹が もっと こわいことを 言いだす前に、 カニは言った。
The crab stopped them before the conversation will escalate.

たしかに、カニはこの三匹よりも強い。
Even though the crab is much stronger than the three,

だが、その力を やみくもに 使うことは したくないのだ。
He did not want to use his power meaninglessly.

「だから、いいかげんケンカは……」
"So you should stop your fight..."

そのとき、四匹に 水が 大きく おし寄せた。
At that moment, a big wave striked the four.

悪い予感がして、四匹は 振り返る。
Feeling a sense of danger, they looked back.

遠くに、サメの大きな影が群れとなって泳いでいた。
Far away, they could see the shade of a shark swimming.
「逃げろー！」
"Swim away!"

カメがさけぶ。
Yelled the turtle,

四匹は あっというまに 散り散りになって、 どこかへと 逃げていった。
and the four animals immediately escaped.

（タコは 岩の陰に 隠れた）
(The octopus hid behind the rock)

緊迫(きんぱく)が あたりに ただよう。
Some moments full of tension passed by.

だが、幸いにも サメは だれにも 気がつく気配はなく、
だんだんと 遠ざかっていった。
But luckily, the shark did not seem to notice any of the animals and it went away.

別々の場所で、けれども 同時に、四匹は ため息を つくと つぶやいた。
At different places, but at the same time,
the four animals thought of the same thing.

「あーあ 海なんて もうこりごりだあ〜　森に行けたらなあ」
"Ohh gosh, I'm tired of being in the sea. I wish I could be on land."

そのとき、地平線の はるか遠くに 見える 森の上から 顔を出した 高い山が、
太陽の光に きらめいたように 見えた。
Then, a mountain standing tall above the forest over the horizon,
seemed to shine under the sun.

第３章．サメだ〜　森めがけて逃げろ〜
３. Shark attack~ Run to the Forest

それは また別のある日、ふたたび 三匹は ケンカをしていた。
Few days later, the three animals were fighting again.

きっかけは とても くだらない。
It started from a tiny problem like many other days.

カメが エビとタコを からかって、二人に 砂を かけたのだ。
The turtle threw some sand at the shrimp to tease.

カニは そのようすを 遠くから 見つめていた。
The crab was watching it from afar.

このケンカは どうにか ならないのだろうか。
Is there any solution to stop their fighting?

自分が 注意した ところで、だれも 聞いては くれないだろう。
He knew they would never listen to his warnings.

カニは 頭を なやませていた。
The crab was thinking what to do.

カニが ふと 上を見あげると、 そこには エイの群れが 光に照らされて 泳いでいた。
When he looked up there was a group of stingray swimming in the light.

それは まるで 空を飛ぶ 鳥達のように とても自由で、とても楽しそうで、
それにくらべて おれは……
It had freedom and joy like a flying bird, but how am I in contrast..

カニは 悲しそうに まゆを 落とした。
The crab dropped his sight.

自分も もし エイのように 速く泳げたら、こんな ところからは、サッサと 逃げさって しまえるのに。
He could immediately escape from this sea bed,
only if he was able to swim fast like them.

「おーい、カニー！ ちょっと こっちに 来てくれよー！」
"Hi crab! Would you mind coming here!"

カメの声がして、カニは 三匹へと 目をむける。
Hearing the turtle, the crab looked up.

おそらく、また ケンカに くわわって というのだろう。
They are telling him to join their fight again.

カニは三匹に背を向けようと、一歩しりぞいた。
He stepped back, not wanting that to happen.

その時だった。 遠くに、黒い影が よぎる。
It was at that moment, that a black shade crossed the sea.

光が さえぎられて あたりが 暗くなる。
It sweeped away the surrounding light,

背びれで 水を切り進み、
とがった歯を むき出しながら せまってくる影、それは……
cutting through the wave with its sharp fin, appearing with its sharp teeth.

「サメだ！」
"Shark!"

いち早く 気がついた カニが さけんだ。
Yelled the crab.

カメとエビが 振り返った。
The turtle and the shrimp looked back.

だが、タコだけは 気がつく ようすがなく、海の中を ただよっていた。
However, only the octopus was flowing in the sea not realizing the danger.

サメは タコに 向かって 泳いでいく。
The shark is swimming to the octopus.

助けに行くにも、もうまに あわない。
It's too late to go save.

思わず 三匹が 目をつぶった その時、 灰色の影が タコを 連れ去った。
When the three animals shut their eyes, a glay shape took the octopus away.

サメの牙は 水を切る。
The teeth of the shark cut the sea.

その影は、 ものすごい 速さで エビ、 カメ、 そしてカニも 背に乗せて 泳ぎ去った。
That gray shape also took the shrimp, turtle,
and the crab on its back and jetted away.

カニが 恐る恐る 目をあけると、 それは 先ほどの エイだった。
That gray shape was the stingray.

「しっかり つかまって！ 逃げるよ！ 」
"Hold on, we are escaping! "

どうやら、四匹を サメから 助けて くれたようだ。
He was the hero of the moment, that saved the four animals from the shark.

「あ、ありがとう！」
"Thank you!"

エイの 背中に 乗って、　四匹は 海の中を進む。
Behind the stingray,

振り返れば、するどい まなざしの サメが 追いかけてきていた。
There was a shark following them.

すると、楽しそうな　エビ、タコ、　そして カメの声が 聞こえた。
The shrimp, octopus and the turtle exclaimed joyfully.

「なんて 速いのじゃ！」
"My god, how fast!"

「ワンダフルですわ！」
"Wonderfully!"

「これは すごいぜ！」
"This is bloody cool!"

まるで ジェットコースターに 乗るように 両手を上げて、はしゃぐ三匹に、カニは 声をあげて笑った。
The crab laughed out loud.

（タコは こう喜んでいる、）
The octopus is saying excitedly,

「こんな ジェットコースターなら、 毎日 乗りたいですわ〜」
"If this is a jet coaster I would like to enjoy it everyday!"

いったい、タコに サメは 見えているのだろうか。
Is she really aware of the shark?

「なあ、エイよ！ おれたちを 浅瀬まで 連れて 行ってくれないか？」
"Hey stingray, can you take us to the beach?"

浅瀬なら、サメは 追って こられない。
The shark can only swim in the deep sea.

そして、ずっと ひとめ 見てみたかった 森を 見ることが できる。
And that will make it possible for the crab to see the forest.

「わかった。まかせて！」
"Okay agreed!"

その返事に、後ろの 三匹から 歓声が 上がった。
Then the three animals cheered.

「森へ 行くのじゃー！」
"To the forest!"

エイは さらに 水を切って、泳ぐ速さを あげる。
The stingray increased its swimming speed.

ほほに あたっては 後ろへと 流れていく 水の冷たさが ここちよい。
The water flowing back was nicely cold.

カニが 振り返れば、もう サメの姿は なかった。
He saw no shape of the shark, when the crab checked the back.

やがて エイは 水面近くまで いっきに 泳いで 上がった。
As the stingray swims forward it accelerates to the water surface.

そして、空に 向かって 飛び上がった。
Then he jumped up to the sky,

まるで イルカが 天高く ジャンプを するように。
like a dolphin.

「わー！」
"Woow!"

エイは クルクルと 回転しながら、海へと まいもどる。
The stingray fell back to the water rolling in the air.

ケンカを していたこと なんて もう忘れ、四匹が 大きな歓声を あげた。
Forgetting the early fight, four animals cheered.

浅瀬は、もうすぐ そこに せまっていた。
The beach was near.

第４章．森もあぶない〜　海の底へにげろ〜
４.Forest is Dangerous, to the Seabed

「ほら、着いたよ」
"There we are"

エイの声に、四匹は 背中から 飛びおりた。
The four jumped off from the stingway's back.

そして 太陽の光が さすほうへと 泳いで向かう。
and swam to where the sun lights.

やがて、砂が 足にあたり 四匹は 水から顔を出した。
The animals appeared from the ocean where the sand touched them.

そこにあるのは、太陽の下で 輝く 広い砂浜の先に、どこまでも 広がる深い森。
There was a shining beach under the sky, and beyond there was a deep forest.

そのまん中に そびえ立った 大きな山は、まるで 大地の守り神のように 大きく見えた。
And the large mountain in its center looked like a king of the land.

「これが 森か！」
"The forest, this is!"

「わたくし、ここに 住みたいですわ！」
"I wish to live here!"

エビ、タコ、カメ、そして カニが 水を バシャバシャと たたく。
The shrimp, octopus, turtle and the crab slapped the water joyfully.

舞い散った 水が あわい金色に 輝いては、消えていった。
The water splash shone in bright gold.

緑色の森には、凶暴(きょうぼう)な サメなんていない。
There are no violent shark in this forest,

ケンカも いっさい 起こらないように 見えた。
and no fights seemed to occur.

ところが、突然 どこからか 低いうなり声が 聞こえてきた。
However, there was a roar.

あわてて あたりを 見まわした カニは、こちらを向いて 牙をむき出す、大きな獣の姿を 見つけた。
The crab looked around and found a large beast showing its teeth.

「あれは？！」
"What the hell is that!"

カニが 言ったよりはやく、三匹は 顔色を変えて いちもくさんに 逃げ出した。
The three animals immediately dashed to the sea.

カニも すぐさま 後に続く。
and the crab followed after.

だが、陸上では 獣の方が 三匹の何倍も速い。
However the beast was much faster on land.

すぐ後ろに あらい鼻息が かかるのを 感じた。
They felt its breath coming closer and closer.
「海に逃げろー」
"Escape~"

どこか のんびりとした カメの声が、よけいに 危機感を ふるい立たせた。
The turtle's optimistic voice only made them rush more.

四匹は ひっしで 水の中へと 入っていく。
Four animals were now going in the water.

少しして、浅瀬から だいぶ はなれた 四匹は 水面から 顔を出した。
A few moments later,
they got away from the shallow beach and appeared from the ocean surface.

住みなれた 海の香りが、風に 乗って ただよってくる。
The familiar scent of the sea was flowing by the wind.

「どこにだって 危ないものは いるんだなぁ。」
"There are no place of just sweet peace"

カメが 陸を 見ながら 言った。
Said the turtle watching the beach in afar.

その言葉に、エビが うなずいた。
The shrimp nodded.

「海も 森も、大して 変わりは せんのだな」
"I suspect there's no major difference between the sea and the forest"

「でも わたくしは、水が たくさん あるところでないと いやですわ」
"Okay, but I can't handle anywhere without rich water"

強い日ざしに、タコが 顔に 腕を かざしながら 言った。
Said the octopus covering its face from the bright light.

そうだな、と カメとエビが 続く。
The turtle and the shrimp agree.

そんな三匹を見て、カニは にこりと 笑った。
The crab smiled watching his friends.

「だからさ、おれたちは このでっかい海で 生きていこうぜ。
"If so, let us live together in this massive ocean.

ケンカなんて もうやめて、海をもっと いいところにしよう」
No fighting between the comrades anymore,
and make this sea a wonderful place"

エビ、タコ、そしてカメが、カニを振り返った。
The shrimp, octopus and the turtle looked at the crab.

カニは 片手を 上にかかげて 言った。
The crab raised its arm and said,

「みんなでな！」
"By all of us!"

三匹が 大きく うなずいた。
The three animals cheered.

ここは まぶしい太陽の光が射しこむ、透きとおった青い海。
Under the bright sunshine there is a clear blue sea.

さまざまな物語が くり広げられる、南国の青い海の生きものたちの楽園だ。
Where many stories occur everyday in the aquamarine of the south,
a true paradise of the sea animals.
